Have you ever had some of these thoughts?
- “I’m so good at self-control, striving, and pushing through– why do I feel so miserable?”
- “I want to be closer to people, but I’m scared to let them see the real me– I don’t want them to think less of me.”
- “The last time I took a vacation felt like a waste, I couldn’t even figure out how to relax, I was just anxious the whole time.”
- “I always want to get things right, so I mentally imagine all the possible outcomes ahead of time so I don’t make a mistake.”
- “Honestly, sometimes it’s kind of annoying that other people aren’t putting as much thought and care into their choices as I am, but I also hate feeling resentful.”
Radically Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy (RO DBT) is a research-supported therapy for overcontrol (OC), perfectionism, and rigidity. This coping style, while sometimes very effective, at other times can leave us feeling exhausted, isolated, stuck, and disconnected.

Hi, I’m Margee Quinn, LICSW (she/they)– fellow overcontrolled human, RO DBT Skills Class facilitator, therapist and business owner. In addition to individual therapy, I offer RO DBT Skills Class to provide added support for issues of overcontrol, which may show up as eating disorders, OCD, depression, anxiety, or struggles with feeling socially connected.
RO DBT Skills Class is an educational opportunity to learn and practice embodied skills of openness, flexibility, and social connectedness in community with other overcontrolled (OC) folks.

Rather than “top-down” approaches that work to change your thinking in order to change your embodied experience, RO DBT takes a “bottom-up” approach- teaching you how to change your physiology in order to improve your psychological health and well being.
Enrollment to new members opens every 10 weeks. An initial 10 week commitment is required, with encouragement to continue through the full 30 week curriculum.
- When: Tuesday evenings 7pm – 8:30pm PST
- Where: Zoom
- Upcoming schedule: New class starts May 26th. Summer break July 14th and 21st (no class those dates).
Frequently Asked Questions
I’m already in individual therapy- is that okay? How will this help?
Yes! RO DBT skills class can be a helpful complement to individual therapy, because you’ll get dedicated time and accountability to learning and practicing skills to change your behaviors. This will free up your individual sessions to focus more on processing and integrating your new learning. With newly increased openness, flexibility, and connectedness, you may even see more progress in your ongoing individual therapy than you had prior to skills class.
What if I like being overcontrolled? Do I have to give that up?
Nope! We all inherently lean one way or another– more overcontrolled or undercontrolled. Your overcontrolled nature has probably been so useful to you in so many ways, and I certainly have no interest in changing the ways it’s helping you! Overcontrol becomes a problem when your ability to control, push through, or compulsively strive starts getting in the way of you feeling joy, living in alignment with your values, or connecting to others in the ways you’d really like. RO DBT Skills Class helps you increase the variety of tools in your toolkit to add to your resources, rather than taking away what’s already working for you.
How is this different from “regular” DBT?
“Regular” DBT was developed to support people who struggle with problems related to undercontrol– such as impulsivity, substance use, emotion dysregulation, self-harm, and other externalizing behaviors. People who struggle with overcontrol need different supports and experience different problems than people who are undercontrolled. RO DBT was created to support people who struggle with overcontrol.
Do I need a particular diagnosis to participate in RO DBT Skills Class?
Nope! RO DBT is a research-supported treatment for a spectrum of experiences that have one thing in common: excessive inhibitory control, or overcontrol (OC). If you identify with being overcontrolled– welcome to the party! I’d love to have you in RO DBT Skills Class.
Do I need to have prior experience with RO DBT or have an RO DBT individual therapist in order to join?
Nope! No prior experience with RO DBT is expected or required.
If I do have prior experience with RO DBT, how will this help me?
RO DBT Skills Class will be a great opportunity for you to practice, deepen, and refine your ability to implement RO skills in your day to day life.
What does a typical RO DBT Skills Class consist of?
Classes are structured and consist of homework review, mindfulness activities, new educational content, and assignment of new homework.
What kind of benefits can I expect from participating in RO DBT Skills Class?
After RO DBT Skills Class, people often feel more accepting and open to their life as it is, as well as more empowered and able to make necessary changes. Taking on a stance of radical openness does not mean that certain things are not painful, or that stress never arises. Rather, people who complete RO DBT Skills Class often leave feeling more equipped, more resourced, and connected enough to face whatever life may throw at them.
This can show up in a number of different ways– having a hard day and being able to feel genuine self-compassion, choosing to do something that’s aligned with your values even though it scares you, being able to truly enjoy eating a sweet treat with friends, surfing the urge to engage in old behaviors and then choosing not to. . . it’s feeling present, embodied, flexible, and connected. These feelings are possible for you, too.
What is the cost and time commitment for RO DBT Skills Class?
Classes are 90 minutes long and cost $100 per class. Prior to joining class, you will complete a one-time 60-minute individual orientation session, which is also charged at $100. Reach out to schedule your orientation session here.
Do you offer superbills for RO DBT Skills Class?
Yes! As an out-of-network provider, I offer superbills, which are “receipt” statements of what you have paid for class. Depending on the specifics of your insurance plan’s out of network benefits, you may or may not receive reimbursement for a portion of what you paid for class. If you have questions about how to check your out of network benefits, please reach out and I’ll be happy to talk you through it.
