What is evidence-based therapy?

The term “evidence-based therapy” or “evidence-based treatment” has to do with how I decide what I do as a therapist.

We know that what may work for one person may not be helpful to another person. For example, some people who experience trauma find it helpful when people in their lives react with big emotion- for them, this feels validating of the harm they experienced. For other trauma survivors, big reactions make it feel harder to open up about their experiences.

Evidence-based therapy uses techniques that clinical research has found to be helpful to the vast majority of people struggling with a specific issue.

For example, there have been many studies of people who experience PTSD following trauma. Different studies have looked at different treatments to see what helps people get better.

What’s exciting about evidence-based therapy is that you know that the work you’re putting into therapy is very likely to benefit you, because the techniques and strategies your therapist uses have been proven to be helpful to a variety of other people with similar concerns.

I’m trained in cognitive processing therapy, one of the main evidence based therapies for PTSD. If your usual coping skills aren’t cutting it and you’re feeling stuck, it may be time to consider working with a therapist who is trained in evidence-based techniques.
