Evidence Based Treatments for Trauma

This post is part of an ongoing series on trauma healing. While coping skills like grounding can provide some momentary relief from trauma symptoms, trauma focused treatment addresses PTSD and creates lasting healing.

So what are some of trauma focused treatments? The American Psychological Association strongly recommends Cognitive Processing Therapy and Prolonged Exposure for the treatment of PTSD. Below is a brief description of each of these types of treatments:

Cognitive Processing Therapy: is a type of cognitive behavioral therapy that involves learning how to challenge unhelpful beliefs related to the trauma. Turning towards the trauma and shifting these beliefs results in decreased symptoms. I’m trained in this therapy, and I have seen it create immense positive impact for clients with a variety of types of trauma histories.

Prolonged Exposure: is a type of cognitive behavioral therapy that involves gradually approaching trauma related memories, feelings, and situations. This can involve exposure exercises to the feared stimuli in session and out of session, for homework.

Regardless of what type of treatment you seek out, when working on trauma it’s especially important to choose a therapist who feels like a really good fit for you. Working on trauma can feel scary at times, and feeling nervous at the beginning is normal. With the right therapist, you should feel empowered and safe enough to start working towards healing.
